How can I get back personal items left on the bus?
· Personal items brought on board the bus are the sole responsibility of the student. The district is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Items found on a school bus will remain in the bus for approximately 1 week while trying to locate the owner. If no owner is identified, the items will be returned to their school's lost and found. If we cannot identify the school, the lost items will be held in the transportation department for pick up for approximately one more week
If I have a Complaint or Compliment about a bus driver or the bus service, who can I speak with?
· The RIMUSD Transportation Department would like to hear from you. If you have a complaint, compliment, questions, or would like to report an incident, call the Transportation office.
How will my child know which bus to ride?
· At the beginning of each school year, all bus routes are published on our district website (www.rimsd.k12.ca.us) under the transportation section.
At the school sites, staff will assist in boarding the children to make sure they are on the correct route. If a student is in doubt about their bus stop or bus (once they are on the bus), they should tell the driver immediately.
NOTE: Your student shall pay attention to their bus route number and NOT the bus number itself. The route number is on a little black placard next to the driver/student door.
What if my student needs to ride another route or get off at another bus stop other than their designated one on their bus pass?
· If your student needs to get off at another bus stop or ride another bus other than their designated stop/bus, they must obtain an Authorization to Ride pass. To do so, they must provide a written note to their school office from the parent/guardian. The school will then provide them with an Authorization to Ride for them to present to the bus driver. The driver cannot accept a written note..
What is the process to be able to drive my student or other students to an activity /sports trip?
· You must complete the process to become an approved parent driver. Please see the district website/transportation page for instructions and an application packet. (rimsd.k12.ca.us)
What do I do if the bus doesn’t arrive on time?
School buses have to endure the same traffic conditions as commuters. A traffic problem, road closure, or discipline problem can easily throw your bus 10-15 minutes off schedule. If, after 15 minutes, your bus still has not arrived, please call the Transportation Department. In the event we have a down bus, or if the bus is more than 15 minutes late, we will notify parents/guardians through an automated phone message.
Who is eligible for school bus transportation?
In accordance with AR 3541
The Superintendent or designee shall design transportation routes and stops to promote the safety of students and maximum efficiency in the use of buses. Students who reside beyond the minimum transportation distances listed below shall be eligible for transportation services to the school of their attendance area:
1. For elementary school students:
Grades K-3: three-fourths mile Grades 4-8: one mile
2. For students attending a three-year junior high school:
Grades 7-9: two miles
3. For students attending a four-year high school:
Grades 9-12: two miles
The Superintendent or designee may authorize transportation within walking distance when safety problems or hazards exist.
How are bus routes designed?
· Routes are designed for safety, efficiency, and conservation of time.
Does my child need to have his/her bus pass to board the bus?
· For safety, all students MUST have their current year bus pass on their person at all times while riding the school bus. If a student loses their bus pass, they may contact transportation to buy a replacement bus pass for $20.00.
When I’m present at my child’s bus stop, may I walk my child across the street without the school bus driver’s assistance?
· No. California law VC 22112(1) indicates that all students in grades Pre-K through 8 MUST be escorted by their school bus driver if they need to cross the street, even in the presence of the child’s parent/guardian. Both parents and students shall cross between the driver and the school bus.
Will an elementary school student be dropped off at the bus stop if no adult is present to receive the student?
· Yes. Students in grades 1 through 12 are not required to be met and will be released at the bus stop. Safety to and from the bus stop is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility. Only Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Special Ed students are required to have a designated ADULT parent/guardian or anyone designated on the student's emergency card at the bus stop to receive them. The designated person must be at the bus stop to physically take custody of a student, as the driver will not release the student otherwise.
What happens if there is no one to receive a Pre-K or Kindergarten student at the bus stop?
· It is the parents’ or guardians’ responsibility to make the necessary arrangements for their child. However, if no one is present to receive a Pre-K or Kinder student, the student will be returned to their attending home school at the earliest convenience. It will then be the parents’/guardians’ responsibility to pick up the student(s) accordingly. Multiple occurrences of this nature can lead to suspension of transportation privileges.
What type of communication does the Transportation Department have with Rim School Bus Drivers when they are transporting students?
· All school buses are radio, video camera, and GPS equipped. Radios and GPS are expressly used for the safety of students and to determine the whereabouts of a bus or student(s)
How are the school bus drivers trained?
All drivers must be certified by the California Highway Patrol. Prior to certification, the driver must successfully complete a medical examination, complete at least twenty (20) hours of classroom training, complete at least twenty (20) hours of behind-the-wheel training, pass a fingerprint and background check, and receive their first aid and CPR certificate. All drivers must also complete ten (10) hours of in-service training each year. Drivers must renew their licenses and certificates at least every five (5) years.
If you are a new student to our district, please bring your student or a picture to the bus pass office during business hours.
Please be aware that bus routes may change throughout the school year, so please refer to transportation for the most current information.
